Two men charged after flight from police leads to collision

Apr 5, 2018 | 12:08 PM

Grande Prairie RCMP say two men have been charged after a March 24 incident where a stolen truck fled from police before crashing into a semi.

Police say at around 1:30 a.m., they were on patrol when they tried to make contact with a man outside of a parked vehicle in a hotel parking lot downtown.

When police turned on their emergency equipment, the man jumped in the truck and drove off southbound on 100 Street. RCMP did not give chase.

The same truck later ran into the driver’s side of a semi at 109 Street and 84 Avenue. The man driving and another man ran off. A woman who was also in the pickup was injured and had to be taken to hospital. The semi driver was not hurt.

Twenty-four-year-old Brandon Briand of Grande Prairie is facing 11 charges, including impaired and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and seven counts of failing to comply with conditions.

Twenty-five-year-old John Tustin also of Grande Prairie is facing three counts, including obstructing a  peace officer. RCMP say he was on parole at the time of this incident.

Both are due in court Monday.
