New Executive Director hired to lead GP Tourism

Apr 24, 2018 | 10:34 AM

A new Executive Director has been hired to lead the Grande Prairie Regional Tourism Association.

Association Vice President Don Whiteford says James Leppan will start next week and has experience dealing with similar organizations.

“Both in private sector and public sector, he has also been good at leading people. We need someone in that position that is a leader of staff that we have there and that is also good with the public because it is a very public position, you have to be the face of tourism in Grande Prairie and region.”

He says the expectation is that Leppan will grow the local tourism industry as well as secure funding.

“We do have some budget challenges in front of us,” said Whiteford, “we need more funding from the various levels of government and we also need more from Travel Alberta and long-term commitment so he is going to have to be working on a lot of those projects, as well as just expanding the visibility of tourism in our region.”

He says the outgoing executive director will stay on for a couple weeks to help Leppan gets his bearings.
