Four Grande Prairie locations included on provincial daycare expansion list

The Alberta government is expanding its $25 a day child care program, and several centres in Grande Prairie will be part of the program.

The province announced the expansion in Edmonton today, almost one year after the original pilot project was announced for 22 centres. The expansion now includes 100 centres across the province.

In Grande Prairie, there are four locations included. The program is set to be implemented at YMCA Patterson Child Care, Children’s Centre Demonstration Day Care, Building Blocks Daycare Centre, and A Bright Beginning Child Care Centre.

The YMCA Clairmont Child Care, Beaverlodge Day Care, Sugar Plum Tree in Peace River, and Valleyview & District Early Learning & Childcare Centre Society are also included on the list.

During a stop in Grande Prairie, Minister Marg McCuiag-Boyd called the announcement crucial for families in the north.

“It’s going to allow more flexibility for families to work and still get quality childcare. I am very happy about this announcement,” said the Energy Minister.

“These daycares are set up for children to get a quality foundation before they reach schools.”

The subsidized spaces will be available as early as next month, with the majority switching over by June.

The province says the expansion will create 6,000 additional affordable child care spots in Alberta.

Notley says a list of 82 centres across the province offering the set-cost care is now available online, and the additional 18 centres will be announced in the coming months.

The premier says parents shouldn’t have to choose between daycare and groceries, so the province is stepping up the fight to help those families.
