Five people left homeless after South Patterson fire

Apr 28, 2018 | 9:12 AM

A working smoke alarm and quick actions of neighbours kept a fire at a South Patterson duplex from getting worse.

City fire crews were notified Friday night after a neighbour heard the smoke alarm going off in the unit.

Once they arrived, they quickly controlled the fire from spreading to other rooms.

Nobody was in the home at the time, but five people have been displaced because of the fire.

They spent the night in a hotel thanks to the generousity of one of their neighbours.

Victim Services and the Red Cross are also assisting the residents.

Grande Prairie Fire Department is investigating the cause of the blaze and damage amounts have yet to be released.
