Peace Region man walking to raise money and to salute his Dad

May 2, 2018 | 5:30 AM

A Peace Region man has started a long journey on foot that he hopes will help in the fight against cancer.

Jimmy Lefebvre is walking from his parent’s house in Grande Prairie to his Dad’s grave in Prince Edward Island. The elder Lefebvre died of cancer.

“Watching somebody withering away due to cancer and almost giving up the fight, I’m here to carry on the fight for the rest of those who aren’t able at this particular time.”

Lefebvre is hoping his trek, called the Can-Survive Walk 2018, will raise $100-million, something he says amounts to the cost of a cup of coffee for every person in Canada. He is working with Canada Gives in the hope that the impact of the money raised can continue on for, in his words, “generations to come.”

Lefebvre adds his whole family is involved.

“My Mom’s in, driving the motorhome. My wife and my three youngest children, my daughter that’s nine and my twin boys are eight, (they are also with me.). I’ve got an older son that’s 19 who’s not able to get away from work for as long as we’re going to be on the road, so hopefully, he can join us a few times along the way.”

He says he hopes to walk 55 kilometres per day and he does have his winter gear with him.

“To be honest with you, I’m looking forward to the snow. I’m looking forward to (hitting) it. I know we will hit it somewhere, I just don’t know where. Hopefully, it’s not for a little while yet.”

Lefebvre’s goal is to reach his Dad’s grave in PEI by August 31, which would have been the elder Lefebvre’s 72nd birthday.
