HIV North closer to bringing a Mobile Supervised Consumption Service to Grande Prairie

The HIV North Society has submitted its application for federal exemption as they work towards bringing a Mobile Supervised Consumption Service to Grande Prairie.

Society Executive Director, Melissa Byers says once approval is given, they can start getting the unit ready.

“It’s going to take about six months for our unit to get ready. It is a custom build, we have to completely build and retrofit the model, so its six months delivery. We are looking at delivery times for October November.”

She says although the unit is mobile, it will not move.

“If we did decide if it was in this location one day, we decided it wasn’t working there, we would completely have another community engagement session for people within a four-block radius of the new proposed site and just get feedback from the community, we don’t really want to surprise the community. We want to do it in a good way.”

The society conducted a survey last month and the information collected was needed for the application.

Byers says 122 people completed the survey with 39 of those in the area the unit, near the hospital.
