Stranded man located through local emergency agency collaboration
A 75-year-old man got his vehicle stuck in mud in a wooded area on Monday while out for a scenic drive and had to be rescued.
On May 7, RCMP was called around 6:30 p.m. to find the stranded man. His location was pin-pointed by using cell phone information which showed that he was around 80 kilometres out of the city beside the Smoky River.
With the help of Grande Prairie Technical Search and Rescue (TSAR), RCMP Police Dog Services, Police, and STARS were able to search the area and find his vehicle. Just over five hours later, STARS spotted the man about 1.5 kilometres from his vehicle. STARS was able to pick up the man and take him to the hospital for evaluation.
In a media release from RCMP, they said community partnerships will continue to be used such as with STARS and TSAR to “better ensure public safety and efficient deployment of resources”.
