Two-day Impaired Driving Education event

The Grande Prairie RCMP will be hosting an Impaired Driving Education session for local high schools. It started Wednesday at the Grande Prairie Composite and Peace Wapiti Academy. 

Constable Krystle Czaplicki says these sessions for students are imperative.

“It’s really important that we keep our youth safe out there on the road and make sure that they know all the consequences of getting behind the wheel impaired.”

 The Youth Initiatives and Education in Lifestyles and Driving Association events will see students put through multiple scenarios and have them listen to several speakers.

“So, the kids are going to work through different stations,” said Czaplicki. “Every type of emergency service is going to talk to them about why they shouldn’t be getting behind a wheel impaired.”

Czaplicki said it’s all about education, being safe on the road and showing just how dangerous impaired driving can be.

“We are going to have a station where they [students] have the opportunity to wear the fatal vision impaired goggles to see what it does to their vision. It’s really important that they are aware that it’s not safe and if you’re impaired you shouldn’t be getting behind the wheel of your vehicle.”

The two-day event will conclude on Thursday from 12 to 3 p.m. at the Eastlink Centre parking lot.
