Canada Games Statue taken down as safety precaution
Residents of the City of Grande Prairie may have noticed one of the city’s most well-known monuments being taken down Wednesday.
City crews were busy inspecting and taking apart the Canada Game’s statue in front of Revolution Place. Manager of Strategic Communications Shane Burke explains the reasoning behind the removal.
“It goes through a regular inspection every year to determine that it is structurally sound. Last week during the high winds, some City employees noticed it was swaying in the wind a bit more than usual. So a private inspector was called in to look at it. After that inspection, it was determined the best course of action was to remove the monument and do a thorough inspection.”
Burke added safety was also a huge concern regarding the statue.
