Fire Advisory in place for GP Forest Area

May 11, 2018 | 5:30 AM

Dry and windy conditions have moved the fire hazard to high and prompted a fire advisory.

With the fire advisory, no new fire permits will be issued until the area greens up or we receive a significant amount of precipitation.  Active permits are still valid, but users are asked to check their permit requirements.

The fire advisory was put in place Thursday at noon.

“Small, safe, cooking and warming (camp)fires are still allowed,” said Wildfire Information Officer Kelly Burke.  “We just want everybody to exercise caution with this dry grass and windy conditions.

Burke says off-highway vehicles are big fire starters for this time of year and she encourages everyone to check their OHV’s.

“Make sure you have a spark arrestor and that there is no debris caught up in and around the exhaust that can heat up, fall off, and cause a wildfire.”

She says chains dragging from vehicles can also cause fires. And she says although it is not a huge problem in our area, fires can be started by throwing cigarettes out of vehicles.

If you spot a wildfire, you’re asked to call 310-FIRE.
