Domestic violence awareness training for landlords

May 14, 2018 | 6:19 AM

A presentation on May 22 aims to teach landlords and property managers how to be aware of domestic violence and what to do if their tenants are put in that type of situation.

Valerie Thiessen, Landlord Tenant Advisor with the City of Grande Prairie says the target audience for this workshop is landlords, property managers, and employees of those agencies.

Thiessen says very often domestic violence is treated as a private matter that’s kept quiet when in fact it can affect the staff of that facility and the other tenants.

“So (the landlord’s) responsibility is to be able to recognize the signs and symptoms and have that discussion with the people and then offer some sort of support in referrals, where possible,” she explained.

“This presentation will include information on how to help prevent domestic violence, what to do when domestic violence occurs, a list of services tenants can call for help, a list of agencies to contact for more help about domestic violence, and a list of educational resources to learn more about domestic violence.”

The event takes place at The Stonebridge Hotel (12102 100 Street) on May 22 from 11:45 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Tickets are available at Community Social Development (10030 102 Ave) for $10.  A light lunch will be served.

Landlords, property owners, and all members of the public are welcome to attend.
