Wildfire advisory remains in place for the Grande Prairie area

May 18, 2018 | 3:12 PM

Heading into the long weekend, a fire advisory remains in place for the Grande Prairie Forest Area.

Wildfire Information Officer Kelly Burke says no new fire permits will be issued for heavy burns, but safe campfires are OK.

“A safe campfire means always using the fire pit ring provided. Never leave your campfire unattended. When you are done with your campfire, soak it, stir it and soak it again and check to see if the ashes are cool. If there are not cool, keep adding water.”

Burke adds Albertans can stay connected through a new Alberta fire bans app.

“We just launched that this last week. You can go on there and find out if there are advisories, bans or restrictions in the areas that you live [in] or are traveling to.  It’s a great app to check out. You can download it today. Also, with our wildfire app, you can get up to date info on any wildfires that are burning in the province.”

There is not a ban in place at this time for the GP area.

She says north of Valleyview really didn’t receive much rain so some of those areas are still listed as extreme and there are some fire restrictions and bans in place there.
