May 24: Environment Canada ends heat warning

May 23: We are under a heat warning issued by Environment Canada.

The area includes Grande Prairie and extends to Demmitt, La Glace and the MD of Greenview.

The warning is issued because the maximum daily temperatures Wednesday and Thursday are expected to reach 29C and a minimum of 14C overnight.

There is a chance we could break a weather record Wednesday if the temperature goes over 30C.

Medical Officer of Health for the North Zone Dr. Albert De Villiers says people need to stay hydrated and try to stay out of the heat.

“Especially if you are working outside make sure you wear a hat or other protective equipment, long sleeve shirt and pants light colored preferably and sunscreen.”

He says signs of heat exhaustion include “heavy sweating and your skin gets cold and clammy, you can get nausea at that point, get muscle cramps and dizziness, headaches.”

Other tips/reminders:

– Drink plenty of water and other non-alcoholic, non-caffeinated beverages to stay hydrated.

– Do not leave any person or pet inside a closed vehicle, for any length of time.
