Pre-pay fuel legislation applauded by local company

Jun 1, 2018 | 6:50 AM

New rules are in place province-wide Friday (June 1st)  that make it mandatory to pre-pay for fuel at the pumps and management at New Horizon Coop in Grande Prairie is backing the provincial legislation.

Over the past four years, five workers have died and three were seriously injured in convenience store robberies and gas and dash incidents in the province.

Dennis Johnson, Gas Bar Division Manager for New Horizon Coop says they stand behind the legislation because it will mean more safety for employees.

“There’s been some instances where people just hop in the vehicle and drive off and they don’t care who’s in the way.”

He says customers may be frustrated with it now because the process is new to them.

“They’re used to just filling their tank and then paying what their tank would hold, and now they’ve got to kind of think about it.  How much do I have to put in? How much is my tank going to take?”

Johnson says it may be an inconvenience to us right now, but if you travel abroad or to other provinces they already have these rules in place.
