Province reveals new driver’s license/ID card design

ALBERTA – The province has unveiled a redesigned driver’s licence with updated security features.

The new card will be phased in as people replace their old licences. The design shows Castle Mountain and the Bow River through Banff National Park. The redesigned identification card (for non-drivers) depicts a wild rose, Alberta’s provincial flower.

In a news release, Service Alberta minister Stephanie McLean said the new cards are the first in North America to incorporate certain security features into their design, to deter identity theft and fraud.

“Our government takes identity fraud very seriously,” she said. “We are using the latest technology available to safeguard people’s personal information and prevent scams.”

In addition, advances in production technology are expected to save the government more than $1 million per year compared to the old cards.

Security features include:

·         Three clear windows containing the driver’s photo. One is in the shape of Alberta

·         Printing that gradually transitions through colours, making it difficult to copy

·         A security background that’s visible through the birth month and year

·         Engraved and raised lettering, as well as an embossed Alberta shield

·         A 3D-embossed image of a dinosaur skeleton (an Albertosaurus) that wraps around the card and through the Alberta-shaped window

·         A tin-like sound the card makes when dropped

This is the first redesign since 2009.
