Commercial vehicles, RVs the focus for Enforcement in June

Enforcement Services have picked their focus for the month of June.

For their monthly Selected Traffic Enforcement Program, officers will be keeping an eye out for commercial vehicles. Throughout the month, they will be doing inspections to find violations that may end in a collision.

Driving tips were provided by the City of Grande Prairie, in a media release, that say to stay far enough behind a vehicle that you can see the mirrors on both sides. It is also recommended people stay three metres behind a commercial vehicle. The release also says to be aware that the larger sized vehicles may have to use more than one lane to turn at times.

Statistics provided by Alberta Transportation say that, in 2016, tractor-trailers were involved in 1.6 per cent of collisions where people were hurt and 8.4 per cent of fatal collisions.

Officers will be on the lookout for recreational vehicles that are sitting too long or hang over the sidewalk. RV parking is the focus of the Bylaw Enforcement Education Program.

According to the release, an RV can be parked directly adjacent to the address that it is registered to for 48 hours before it must be moved. Officers will also be looking for RVs that are hanging over the sidewalk area. People are also not allowed to be in the unit on public property or be used on residential property for sleeping for more than 14 days of the year. Owners should also make sure that vehicles will be able to drive by if it is parked on the street.
