Area wildfire danger now HIGH

Jun 20, 2018 | 5:34 AM

UPDATE: (1;25 p.m.)
A number of jurisdictions in the Peace now have fire advisories in place because of the hot weather.

The County of Grande Prairie issued one as of Noon today, one that includes Beaverlodge, Sexsmith, Wembley, and Hythe.

Anyone with a permit is asked not to burn, and no new permits will be issued except for burn barrels or ceremonial burning.

The Grande Prairie and Peace River Forest Areas also have fire advisories in effect. Safe campfires, charcoal briquettes, and gas or propane stoves and barbecues are still allowed.

Fire advisories are also in effect for Birch Hills and Saddle Hills Counties, along with the MDs of Greenview and Spirit River.

The hot dry weather has moved the wildfire danger to high in the Grande Prairie Forest Area.

Since March 1st, there have been 24 recorded wildfires in the region, burning five hectares in total.

Across the province, there have been 600 fires with 30,290.27 hectares of land burned.

The heat warning issued by Environment Canada for our area has been in effect since late Sunday night.

There is a chance of rain Thursday night into Friday.
