Hythe Motor Speedway racing event cancelled this weekend

Jul 18, 2018 | 11:59 AM

This year’s Big Rig Collision Eve of Destruction racing event has been cancelled at the Hythe Motor Speedway.

BJ Clark, president of the Peace Area Motor Sports Association, says there was a low turnout of cars and competitors.

“We hope to take the remainder of this year and the beginning of next year and the off-season to get more built and more competitor vehicles ready.”

Clark adds they are preparing for next year’s event to make sure it’s a go.

Despite the cancellation, the season has been successful to this point.

“We have actually had one of our best years in a long time. We have eight car counts in all of our regular classes, we have a bunch of new competitors to the speedway. It’s been a success all-round when it comes to our regular racing events,” said Clark.

Clark adds one of the big reasons for the cancellation is the cars require more resources such as insurance.

There are still two more huge racing events to come this summer.

“The August 11 and 12 weekend which is going to be our Big Rig Collision Starter Stock Showdown we already have 15 to 16 home cars, but we are hoping to see some out of town cars for that event. Then, of course, the September long weekend we host the IMCA Super Nationals which is the best pavement modifieds and stock cars from all around the province and western Canada,” said Clark.

In spite of the cancelled event, Clark says the turnout for both audience and racing have been the best he can remember. The weather has cooperated too.

However, the kids, ranging in age from five to 13, Save on Foods Mini Sprint Invitational on the dirt track is set to take place on Saturday and Sunday at 1 p.m. Admission is free.
