CKC Grandstand good to go for Alberta Summer Games
The Alberta Summer Games spectators will be the first to use the newly built CKC Grandstand.
The keys to the building were handed over the ASG organizers Wednesday to get the facility ready for the four-day event.
Although the just over $4.7-million structure isn’t totally complete, Corporate Facilities Project Manager Lanny Brown says it is usable.
“It is designed for growth and designed to support basically two sports fields. One on the east side and one on the west side,” said Brown.
Although the west side area isn’t planned yet, there is a possibility the city can look to approve something for the space. Depending on the event, the change rooms can be manipulated to accommodate the size. There are eight individual rooms with doors between that can be closed or opened to bring more space.
Manager for the Eastlink Centre, Bear Creek Outdoor Pool, Coca-Cola Centre, and the CKC Grandstand, Jim Weller says the seating will fit 852 people while the standing room at the top has about a 1200 person capacity.
“I am just excited to get this place going. You just look at this place and say ‘wow, it completes it’,” said Weller.
“It is another opportunity to maybe invite some tournaments or provincial events.”
Once the games are over, the construction crew will take it over to do finishing touches.
