The second leg of the Pedal Pushers Bike Safety program taking place on Monday

Jul 25, 2018 | 5:30 AM

The 2nd annual Pedal Pushers Bicycle Safety program is set to resume on Monday (July 30th).

Acting executive director for Grande Prairie and Area Safe Communities Cindy Blinston says the program is aimed at teaching kids aged 5 to 10 a variety of things from City and Canadian bike bylaws, to bike etiquette.

“One of our goals is to educate children on both sides of it so they know what the street laws are on both bikes and vehicles and also being respectful if you are using your bike on the sidewalk and shared pathways.”

A dozen kids will have the opportunity to participate in the six-hour course that will expand their knowledge on the do’s and don’ts of riding a bike.

The event has been well received by not just the kids but the parents too.

“We have had some good feedback from the parents of the children who took it last year who did say the kids were eager to practice and share the knowledge they learned in the course. We also send home information with the kids to hopefully educate the parents as well,” said Blinton.

She adds they find most parents don’t know the proper rules for bikes.

The upcoming event has a limited number of participating students per session.

“We want to really make sure we give the best instruction and with this age group we have to keep our crowds to a more reasonable level,” added Blinton.

This is the second of four such sessions. The next two will be held on August 13 and 27.

There will be a public event for bike safety on August 7. It usually sees between 40 and 60 students.
