Maskwoteh Park makeover set to start in 2019

A purposed Children’s Memorial Park is currently in the planning stages.

The park will have a number of features for parents and children as a way to remember infant loss, honour those who have passed away, and find hope for families that have been affected by the loss of a child.

Tiny Hands of Hope President Karen Gilkyson says her team has met with the City to share ideas for the park, which has been in the works for a couple of years now.

“I was wanting to get a feel for what it’s going to look like. Some of the things that are going to work for our vision and what we can do with the City.”

The location is at Maskwoteh Park, across Bear Creek from the new hospital.

Gilkyson adds the Children’s Memorial Park will have an array of different features.

“We are going to be getting a gazebo so that is going to be a place for families to gather for picnics and such. There is going to be a garden as well where families will have the opportunity to purchase trees and benches.”

Gilkyson says at this point, its still up in the air as to what exactly the park will feature.

 

New bridge planned too

The City is also in the final stages of engineering design of a new bridge over the creek to allow for easy access from the hospital to the park.

Project engineer and manager Daniel Dawson says it is currently in the design phase and is roughly 50 to 60 percent complete.

“The whole objective of putting in the pedestrian bridge is to connect the two sides. The bridge is scheduled to officially open in 2019.”

Dawson adds the bridge would improve the overall transportation network in the area.

An open house is set for Tuesday, July 31 at Centre 2000 from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. as the City seeks the public’s feedback on the project.
