Dustin Poirier dusts Eddie Alvarez in UFC’s return to Calgary, want title shot
CALGARY — Dustin Poirier moved up in the queue to fight for the UFC’s lightweight title after beating former champ Eddie Alvarez on Saturday night.
Ranked No. 4 in the world behind Alvarez at No. 3 heading into UFC Fight Night in Calgary, Poirier earned a technical knockout victory at 4:05 in the second of the five-round feature.
He bloodied Alvarez’s face with a flurry of punches. The 29-year-old Poirier (24-5 and one no-contest), from Lafayette, La., expects a title fight.
“These checks are going to cash, I’ve got another win on my record and I’m another step closer to fighting for a world title,” Poirier said. “I’m the best in the world. I can beat all these guys.”
