Full animal rescue common in the summer says organization rep

In the Woods Animal Rescue is looking for people to adopt dogs as they fill up with animals at the height of summer.

Last week, the organization posted about being at capacity for animals, but Grande Prairie Representative Dale Crane says this is the norm.

“During the course of the year, it is fairly give and take. You’ll have a week where you will adopt out 10 dogs. On the Monday and Tuesday following, you would bring in another eight to 12. This is a typical cycle all year long,” said Crane.

“What we find is that once June and July hit the intake stays the same but the adoption drops dramatically.”

He attributes this to people wanting to go on vacation in the summer rather than focus on taking in a new pet.

“Another thing that happens, it is kind of the perfect storm, is a lot of female dogs will go into heat in that March to April timeframe,” said Crane.

The puppies are born in the summer months and animal rescues end up taking them in.

For those that want to help the animal rescues in their area, he recommends volunteering or donating supplies and food.

People with animals should have them spayed or neutered as it helps with population control.
