RCMP encouraging safe driving over the long weekend

Aug 3, 2018 | 1:39 PM

The Heritage Day long weekend is fast approaching and the RCMP are advising people to be safe while traveling around the province.

Cst. Mike Hibbs says there will be many people on the roads.

“For people who are towing travel trailers or trailers with boats or quads, just make sure everything is securely fastened to the vehicle. What we are finding is when we stop vehicles on the highway that are towing trailers, people have a tendency of putting all of their documents into the trailer. They get out of the vehicle to find them,” said Hibbs.

The best place for the paperwork is in the vehicle being driven, according to Hibbs.

It is also encouraged that people have patience on the road and minimize distractions especially young drivers and people on motorcycles.

“Speed is the big thing. They are cutting vehicles off. They are tailgating other vehicles and stuff like that. Speed will be the factor the weekend. If everyone slows down, just be safety minded, then everything should okay on the highway,” he said.

Alberta RCMP is also encouraging people to follow safety tips by using #SummerSafety. They are encouraging people to apply safety rules to all vehicles, keep eyes on the road, don’t drink and drive, and do not take on aggressive driving habits.

“Alberta’s warm seasonal weather brings out motorcycles and other recreational vehicles. Operating any of these conveyances impaired is dangerous and it’s illegal. We will continue to collaborate with the Provincial Traffic Sheriffs, other agencies and our communities to stop impaired driving and riding,” said Supt. Gara Graham, Alberta RCMP Traffic Services.
