Ten-year sentence for former GP resident; guilty pleas in firearm, police chase incident

Alberta Justice says a former Grande Prairie resident has been given a 10-year sentence for manslaughter by a Wetaskiwin court.
 
Gerald Peter Krahn pleaded guilty earlier this year to a reduced charge of manslaughter/use of a firearm after originally being charged with murder.
 
He was also given a lifetime firearm prohibition and a $200 fine.
 
Krahn was charged after the January 2017 death of 36-year-old Christopher O’Reilly of Warburg.
 
O’Reilly died the night on January 30, 2017, in Warburg. Police did not release details of how he died.
 
 
Guilty pleas in firearm, police chase incident
 
Alberta Justice says a man charged after an incident in February after someone brandishing a gun was seen along Highway 40 has pleaded guilty to 16 charges. 
 
Cory Stephens admitted to counts that included two charges of pointing a firearm, possession of a prohibited or restricted firearm, possession of stolen property, failure to comply with recognizance, and breach of conditions in Grande Prairie court August 2.
 
He had originally been facing 51 charges.
 
Grande Prairie RCMP say they were called out at 4 a.m. on February 2 this year after reports of a man along Highway 40 with a gun. Police said they tried to do a traffic stop, but the man drove off. Mounties gave chase but lost sight of the fleeing vehicle because of poor weather conditions.
 
When they found it again, the man driving got out, pointed a weapon at the RCMP members, then ran to a nearby oilfield lease where was arrested.
 
Stephens also pleaded guilty to theft and possession of a firearm in another case, and a separate charge of failure to comply with conditions.
 
He is due back in court August 22.
