County of GP, M.D. of Greenview head volunteers hoping to eliminate tansy weed

The County of Grande Prairie, M.D. of Greenview, along with community organizations are teaming up for the common tansy clean-up today.

Sonja Raven, Agricultural Fieldman for the County, says they are looking to eliminate the noxious weed that is located along the Smoky River.

“The M.D. of Greenview has been working on this project for a couple of years.” This year took advantage of the opportunity to get involved.  We said we would happily participate with them.”

Raven says the clean-up is aimed at cutting out the seed source for the noxious weed along the Smoky River.

“So, by looking after the weeds that are on the islands and on the side of the river, we’re hoping we are decreasing the chance of infestation downstream.”

Noxious weeds get in the way of the growth of good vegetation.

“So, they can infest a farmer’s crop, it reduces their yield, they might have to get their seed cleaned. It reduces biodiversity which then impacts everything from the insects to the animals that might be feeding on the plants that the tansy is displacing,” said Raven.

Raven adds burning the invasive weed is the most effective way of preventing the spread of seeds downstream.

There is a crew of 58 volunteers going out to clean up the weeds.

It was first discovered in 2015 during an inspection.
