Community Foundation cancels Nourish the North fundraiser

Aug 23, 2018 | 5:40 AM

The Community Foundation of Northwestern Alberta will have one less tool to help reach their goal of raising $10-million by 2020.

Nourish the North, an annual wine and auction fundraiser for the organization has been cancelled. CEO Tracey Vavrek says the board of directors are focused on building a strong sustainability plan which includes growing endowment funds.

“It was truly about what was right for the community. We care about this community and we are here to make sure the community is strong. We know we have immense support at the Community Foundation and we are seeing the support in our endowment building. That is really important and that is critical.”

She says when the economy grows so do the needs of the community.

“We, as the Community Foundation, are there to support the other charities and that is our purpose. When we started to evaluate the support that we have received in our sponsorship and ticket sales, we recognized that if we cancelled the event and put our energy into helping other organizations, that is better for our community.”

Vavrek also points to leaving room for other events to be successful which is in line with their mission.

The CFNW’s next event is Invest Northwest on December 5.
