Male mentors needed for Big Brothers Big Sisters

Aug 29, 2018 | 12:36 PM

Big Brothers Big Sisters Grande Prairie and Area is looking for more male mentors to join their organization.

Executive Director Corrine Patterson says a recent campaign was successful but it also meant an increase in children.

“Back in the spring when we had a big drive to find some male mentors, it worked. We increased our numbers and our waiting list went way down. Inevitably, as you are out there in the community trying to get new mentors, the word is getting out about your programs too. So, more kids apply.”

The organization is looking for people that can dedicate anywhere between six to eight hours a month.

“I know there are a lot of gentlemen in this area that work shift work or they are out of town from time to time, that is fine. All it takes is a Saturday afternoon and a movie once or twice a month.”

She feels that expanding into more schools is also important because they can make an impact. For the 2018/2019 school year, the organization will be connected to 18 different schools including in more rural areas like Grande Cache and Rycroft.

“In schools it is us going in and liaising with a specific person there. That person, in turn, meets with the teachers and the teacher refers them to us.”

Due to construction downtown, Patterson is encouraging those interested in getting involved to connect over Facebook or give them a call at (780) 532-0620.
