GP Food Drive looking for volunteers as demand for food bank goes up

Sep 10, 2018 | 7:57 AM

Demand for the local food bank has increased year over year, as organizers of the annual food drive put a call out for volunteers.

The Rotary Community Food Bank Drive’s Jerry Napier says they have about half the teams needed.

“Whether you are an organization or a business that just wants to get involved in the community, we take them all and we will assign a route to you. It takes about three hours on the evening of September 18th and it is just a fun evening.”

He is hoping for a better turn out this year.

“We were short last year, we ended up with about a 120 teams and we needed 135.”

The Salvation Army says the number of hot meals served has increased by 2155 when comparing January to August of last year to this year.

Total people served between January and August was 3100, up 300 from the same time last year and the number of food hampers handed out by the Salvation Army was up 75 to 1275.
