Free bike registry event on Saturday

Sep 11, 2018 | 4:21 PM

After an abundance of reported bike thefts, Crime Prevention is looking to take a more proactive approach to help protect bike owners from would-be thieves.

Cheryl George, Public Education and Event Coordinator with Crime Prevention, says they have an online tool available where people can register their bikes but most people who have had their bikes stolen didn’t know about it.

One of the Enforcement Officers came up with an idea to hold an event and help people register their bikes.

It’s happening Saturday, September 15 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Ernie’s Sports Experts.

George says Enforcement Officers are going to be there to assist with the filling out of the forms, they’ll record the serial number, take a picture the bike, and just like that the bike is registered.

The online registration form is still available on the city’s website for those who cannot make the event at Ernie’s.

RCMP have told our newsroom in the past that returning bikes to their owners that are not registered is very difficult.
