EIA case found in the County of Grande Prairie
Alberta’s Chief Provincial Veterinarian says a single case of equine infectious anemia has been detected in the County of Grande Prairie.
A report on the Horse Canada website says the CFIA confirmed the positive test September 7 and that a vet. had taken a blood sample as part of a sale.
That report also says the horse was not showing any clinical signs of the disease at the time the sample was taken and that it and the other animals it was in contact with are now under quarantine.
Equine Infectious Anemia is a reportable disease that affects horses, mules, and donkeys. There is no human health risk.
Symptoms include loss of coordination, weakness, fever, jaundice, and swelling.
The Chief Veterinarian’s Office says other diseases can show the same signs, so people should contact their vets if they think something is wrong.
The Alberta Equestrian Federation says on its website that a case of EIA was also found in the County of Grande Prairie in 2015.
