Some crops flattened after recent snow fall

Sep 19, 2018 | 1:53 PM

The snow did a lot of damage to cereal crops says County of Grande Prairie Ag. Fieldman Sonja Raven.

“There have been quite a few people that have gotten their canola combined or swathed. Those swaths are probably OK but the wheat and the barley and that sort of stuff, that got pretty flattened, particularly in the centre and the east side. That’s a much, much harder crop to harvest. You have to swath it. The seed is going to end up being downgraded. That’s a definite problem, not to mention the excess moisture on the fields makes them soft and mucky and hard to get in and out of.”

Raven says some of that grain should still be harvested.

“It really depends on how heavy the snow was, how much they got. The County can be quite variable. There are parts on the west side that still look alright, but there are areas in the middle and to the east that’s not looking as good. It’s quite variable, but at the same time, it’s going to pose a much greater challenge for our farmers this year.”

Environment Canada says there will be more chilly weather, maybe some rain or snow over the next few days, with warmer, sunnier weather starting next week.
