Second grizzly found shot dead south of Grande Prairie

Sep 20, 2018 | 3:19 PM

Alberta Fish and Wildlife officers are investigating another case of a grizzly bear being shot south of Grande Prairie.

Less than a week after a female cub was found shot dead off the Weyerhaeuser main haul road, officers received a report yesterday that a mature male grizzly had been shot in the chest.

The male grizzly was found about 104 km south of Grande Prairie on the Red Rock Road, 60 km from where the cub was found. It is believed the bear had been shot at the location in which it was found.

This bear weighed about 500 lbs and was found approximately 15 m off the side of the road.

It is illegal to hunt grizzly bears in Alberta.  They are still classified as a threatened species in Alberta.  Poaching one carries a potential $100,000 fine and/or one year in jail.

Officers are asking the public to come forward with any information that could help with this investigation.

Fish and Wildlife can be reached at 780-538-5265 during business hours or call the 24-hour Report A Poacher line at 1-800-642-3800.
