Rock-Paper-Scissors tournament to raise money for United Way
The first week of October will mark United Way week in the Grande Prairie area.
Participating businesses will have special menu items or things for sale with a portion of the money made going towards United Way Alberta Northwest. Business Development and Resource Manager Jessica Pinette says this five-day event is an easy way for people to help raise money for their organization and a short commitment for local businesses.
“I am really passionate about we do in the community. For myself, I understand the type of people that are accessing our programs because I was one of the ones that have accessed the programs myself,” says Pinette.
She says some restaurants will be offering a “red menu” as an option with some money from food or drink items sold going to their organization. A Rock-Paper-Scissors Tournament is also going on mid-week at Better Than Fred’s.
“(The tournament) is something that we came up with to have a good time. A fun fundraiser that everyone can participate regardless of skill level and training. It is meant to be a fun night out for people as well as raising money for the United Way,” she says.
There will be a cash prize, other prizes and each ticket comes with a pound of wings. It costs $20 to participate and Pinette is hoping for over 100 competitors. Complete with official referees, people will compete at four tables of the restaurant in a “bracket-style” competition with the final games being showcased on the stage.
The 18+ event starts at 7 p.m. on October 3. You can find tickets on Eventbrite.
The United Way Alberta Northwest provides support for over 25 community partners from Grande Cache to the Northwest Territories border and from Slave Lake to the British Columbia border.
