Cannabis store owners prepping in the city, AGLC licences not issued yet

Oct 17, 2018 | 4:03 PM

There are a handful of business owners that have received their development permits from the city to have a marijuana shop but have yet to receive their retail license from the Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis Commission.

Green storefronts are starting to pop up around the city with eager entrepreneurs waiting for their piece of paper that will allow them to stock up and sell their product. Canadian Greens was putting up their signage today and Manager Abbie Hansen says most of their set-up work is done. According to her, their next step is an interview between the owner of the store and the AGLC, but they aren’t sure when exactly they will be open.

“We tried to pry it out of them. AGLC is really good with keeping their secrets which is completely fine because, you know, everybody is hear-say, right?” says Hansen.

“That is why we don’t really don’t want to say ‘oh, we want to open this day’ because it isn’t really up to us.”

Despite not being open yet, she is optimistic about the success of cannabis stores in the Grande Prairie area.

“I follow a couple of groups on Facebook and I see a lot of positive on this,” she says.

There is potential for 27 stores to open up within city limits with that many names in the hat for a business license. Some have already received the first piece of paper, a development permit. Once the AGLC issues cannabis retail licenses, the city then issues the business license.

AGLC says it could be a few weeks before entrepreneurs in our area receive their cannabis retail licenses.
