Local Students Honoured with National Volunteer Awards
A pair of local Grade 12 students were awarded the Governor General’s National Medal for Volunteers last week.
Kaydence Redding and Grace Stephenson are part of the Maverick Movement Social Justice club at Charles Spencer High School.
Redding says they have been able to visit the parts of the world where the money they raised goes towards.
“With the Maverick Movement we have raised over $30,000 for the WE charity, and we have done things like travel to Tanzania and Nicaragua on service building trips where we have actually got to interact with the people that our money is helping in those communities.
Locally the two volunteer where ever it’s needed, including food drives and homeless shelters.
Redding adds both her and Stephenson were stunned by the honour.
“Super surprised for one, but also very honoured to be recognized. But at the same time it is kind of wierd to be recognized because we do not do any of the stuff that we do for recognition.”
The pair were presented their awards by WE Charity founder Craig Kielburger during a special WE Day breakfast event in Edmonton on October 12th.
