City accepting applications for Neighbourhood Outdoor Rink Program
The city is looking for volunteers who want to build and maintain small skating rinks in their neighborhood this winter. The city will provide the supplies and training and Aquatera will supply the water free of charge.
There are over 100 parks in the city that are eligible for outdoor rinks. Barb Welander with the city’s parks operations department says they just need volunteers from neighborhood groups to get started.
“We need five volunteers (per rink), one main contact person who will then be the contact that I deal with and I will give them all the information and train them on how to set up a rink, clean it, flood the ice, and maintain it,” she said.
The rinks would be for skating only, no hockey. Last year there were 27 outdoor rinks operated by neighborhood groups.
