Appeal filed against Parkside Inn building

Nov 14, 2018 | 4:16 AM

An appeal with nineteen supporters has been filed against the Parkside Inn Motel development permit.

The appeal application rolled in on November 6, 2018, and the Subdivision and Development Appeal Board has 30 days from that date to schedule a Public Hearing.

In the Primary Notice of Appeal, the appellant claims that “a member of the appeal board’s ethics are questioned”. They say that Mayor Bill Given being part of two boards, Community Advisory Board on Homelessness and Opioid Task Force, “tainted” a decision made at an Infrastructure and Protective Services committee meeting about the building. They also claim a relative of his working at Addiction and Mental Health North Zone is also a conflict of interest.

Other appellants talk about safety, drug use and property value impacts as reasons for their appeal.

The board could choose to quash the appeal which would have the Canadian Mental Health Association carry on with a community outreach facility at that location. If the board weighs in favour of the appeal, the building would continue as a motel. The board could also come back with a different outcome.

The fate of the building will be decided by the board when they set a date. We will have more information about the process when the date is released.
