Second elder shelter closer to creation

Nov 20, 2018 | 12:07 PM

Construction of a second Elder’s Caring Shelter could start this spring if city council moves ahead with a loan agreement with Metis Local 1990.

The non-profit organization identified the need for the shelter in 2016, according to a report presented at a city committee meeting. Their current Elder’s Shelter opened in 2003 at 9702 99 Avenue with the capacity for 16 people.

A motion was made at committee to approve a loan for funding for a chunk of land downtown.

“I feel like our vision is within reach. This is a big, big (and) happy day for us. We have been waiting for the land for over a year and a half,” says Metis Local 1990 President, Angie Crerar.

She adds that it is important to Grande Prairie as they see people gaining control of their lives once taking part in the program.

“We are working together to meet the needs of the homeless. This project does that. It takes in people (to) work with them, bring them all the help they need. The different agencies, we all work together.”

The organization is looking to purchase the land, located at 9706 and 9708 100 Avenue, for the project at a price tag of about $282,000. The city will look at moving and loaning the funds from their Housing Reserve for the project. The organization would have two to three years to get the building underway and if not, the city would retain the land.

The motion will be presented and a decision will be made at a December 3 city council meeting.

Crerar says the project itself will cost around $7-million with about $5-million in the process of being locked down.
