County Connector officially launches

Dec 10, 2018 | 11:05 AM

There was a big crowd on hand Monday morning in Clairmont at the Wellington Resource Centre as dignitaries from across the region celebrated the launch of the County Connector.

The Honourable Brian Mason, Alberta Minister of Transportation in Clairmont to celebrate the launch along with Grande Prairie Mayor Bill Given, County of Grande Prairie Reeve Leanne Beaupre, and much more.

The first phase of the County Connector project officially launched on December 5th, with service between Grande Prairie, Clairmont, and Sexsmith.

” I understand there has been a decent uptake,” stated Reeve Leanne Beaupre. ” Now it will be getting the word out there that it is up and running.”

The County Connector is a collaborative project from conception to funding to operation.

Alberta Transportation provided $640,000 in operational funding for the two-year pilot program, plus $276,667 in GreenTrip funding to help cover the cost of purchasing a bus.

The County of Grande Prairie provided an additional $138,333 to purchase a transit bus.

The City of Grande Prairie will operate the service for the County over the duration of the pilot program, while the other partnering municipalities are supporting the service in their communities.

“When you come here and see the enthusiasm that people have and see them design their own system. I think that’s the point. The local officials know better than we do in Edmonton,” shared Minister Mason. “So if we can just support them to design a system that really works for their people, then that is really the best outcome as far as I’m concerned.”

Mason added he feels this will be well used in the area not just for seniors, but for young people as well.

Phase 2 of the County Connector which will see service out to Wembley, Beaverlodge, and Hythe is expected to be launched in February of 2019.

The transit system will run Monday to Friday, excluding statutory holidays, with operations starting at 6:40 a.m. in the City of Grande Prairie and ending at 7:25 p.m. in the City.

Riders pay $5 for a one-way trip, while children age 11 and under ride for free.
