Dec 20, 2018 | 12:10 PM

Last week,  the City of Dawson Creek was announced as the host site for Hockey Canada’s World Junior A Challenge in 2019.

Dawson Creek Mayor Dale Bumstead states the community is excited to welcome the world.

“Very excited about this partnership we have with Hockey Canada and to be able o host the World Junior A Hockey Challenge is a really, really great opportunity to for us in the community and the region. Obviously, we’re very excited about it.”

Bumstead thinks Dawson Creek will see a huge economic benefit from the event.

“This is a big-time opportunity. I look at it from that perspective. We bring some really, really first-class hockey into our community, but the economic impact of, you know, you have 400 or 500 hotel rooms for a week or eight or nine days. You’ve got people in your restaurants, spending money in your community, so it has a very, very significant impact on the economy of our community and the region.”

Past Hockey Canada events have also provided an economic boost.

“We’ve hosted the World Under 17 (Hockey Challenge) twice now, in 2015 and 2017. Hockey Canada did the analysis in ’15 for the economic impact for us and Fort St. John when we co-hosted that together. I think they indicated there was about $6-million for it.”

Bumstead knows this event is a unique opportunity to host people from all over the world and knows the community will embrace and support the tournament.

The Tournament takes place from December 7 to 15, 2019.
