Grande Prairie gets its first ride share service

Dec 22, 2018 | 4:30 AM

Grande Prairie has its first ride-sharing service.

TappCar has officially launched in the city earlier this week.

General Manager Cam Mackay says the company has already hired a number of drivers to serve Grande Prairie.

“We have over ten drivers now, after the new year, we’re hoping to have between 20 to 40. We wanted to start before Christmas because that’s a big time for people going to parties and things like that, so we wanted to make sure there was another transportation option for people who don’t want to drive home,” says Mackay.

Mackay adds TappCar doesn’t take hailed rides, and the only way to book a ride with the company is through the app, which requires prepaying for the service.

TappCar began service with a ceremonial first ride with Mayor Bill Given on Thursday.

“This is another example of businesses recognizing that Grande Prairie is the hottest economy in Alberta,” says Given. “Grande Prairie residents are ready for new options. People are connected to their devices all the time and these sort of solutions make a lot of sense.”
