New ‘family style’ Dream Home opens today

Dec 28, 2018 | 6:11 AM

The 26th Rotary Dream Home in Carriage Lane Estates is opening its doors to the public today.

Tickets are now on sale for three draws, the Dream Home, the 50-50, and the Cash Cow Calendar.

Raffle Manager Kevin Hilgers says the house is a completely different design from last year and has been designed for families.

“It doesn’t have a lot of stairs, in fact, if you’re so inclined, it has a slide,” says Hilgers. The 18-foot slide goes to a lower gym area.

He adds having a different home each year is one of the goals of the lottery.

“One of the things we pride ourselves on with the Dream Home Lottery is we let the builder build what they see fit. They’re the experts, not us. It’s a home that’s the opposite of last year’s; last year it was dark, beautiful woods, this year it’s bright colours.”

Ticket proceeds will be going towards 28 local organizations such as Big Brothers Big Sisters and Grande Prairie and Area Safe Communities.

“We raise money for so many in the community.   This year groups that help us sell and therefore receive funding include 577 Parents Association (Air Cadets), Big Brothers Big Sisters Association of Grande Prairie,  Catholic Family Services,  Ecole St. Gerard Playground Fundraising Society,  GPCSD Band Parents Association,  Grande Prairie Friendship Centre Aboriginal Head Start Program,  GPPSD Education Foundation, Grande Prairie and Area Safe Communities,  Grande Prairie Pipe Band Association, Grande Prairie Piranhas Swim Club, Grande Prairie Rotaract Club, Grande Prairie Skating Club, Grande Prairie Wrestling Club,  KidSport Grande Prairie, Kleskun Hill Museum Society, Nitehawk Alpine Ski Team, PARDS Therapeutic Centre, 1992489 Alberta Society – Parent Dance Group,  Peace Wapiti Academy Band Parent Association, QEII Hospital Auxiliary Association,  Sexsmith Tumbling Club,  Grande Prairie Society of Irish Dance,  Special Olympics Grande Prairie,  Rotary Club of Grande Prairie Sunrise,  Traditional Paths Society,  Wolverines Wheelchair Sports Association.  We’re excited to get rolling with another fundraiser that touches so many in our community,” explained Kris Podolski, President-Elect of the Rotary Club of Grande Prairie.

Hilgers notes some money will also go towards some of the Rotary’s bigger projects such as the renovation of the D-Company Armories building.

The home opens to the public for tours today.

“It’s really become a Christmas tradition for a lot of families to go to the dream home and experience it for yourself. Seeing what’s new in trends in design, in colours, in electronics is all part of the fun. Bringing the whole family is a real positive aspect of the dream home lottery.”

Hilgers adds last year tickets for all three draws sold out.

The builder of the home was High Mark Homes.

Its hours are Thursday and Friday from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., and weekends and holidays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
