Three people saluted for bravery during 2016 Prairie Mall shooting

Dec 29, 2018 | 4:30 AM

Three people have been saluted by Grande Prairie Crime Prevention for their actions during the 2016 shooting at the Prairie Mall.

Anneliese Reckewitz was there teaching some girls self-defence. She got them to a safe place before helping them leave the Mall.

Chris Sibley and Lucas Stauffer were working as security guards at the time.

Sibley says he recognized the sound of a gunshot right away. He ran towards the shooter, but he was already running away. Sibley then decided to see in anyone was hurt.

“And then I found the victim that got shot. The bullet went through his leg, severing the femoral artery completely, then skipped off the floor and grazed two other people. The two other people we found afterward, but the first guy was bleeding out.”

Sibley eventually used his tie to tie around the victim’s leg to help stop the bleeding. Stauffer called 911 and got extra security people to come in.

Sibley adds he had first aid training in various areas, including his time in the Canadian military. That time also helped him recognize the sound of gunshots.

He thinks it’s great to share this award with Lucas, but adds a lot of others deserve credit as well.

“There was a whole lot more people that helped in that situation. It wasn’t just us. The Mall administration, Lionel Frey, he was instrumental in that one. He helped us out huge. There was a driver from one of the buses, the Handi-Bus, he was in there and he helped us out with it, getting the victim into a more prone position and elevating his feet and everything else. Every time I looked at somebody and said ‘I need help with this, go get me that.’ they would run right away, there (were) no questions asked.

In July the shooter, Liban Musse, pleaded guilty to a charge of aggravated assault in a Grande Prairie court. He was given a three-year prison sentence.
