Peace River celebrating 100 years as a town in 2019

Jan 3, 2019 | 10:11 AM

Peace River will mark an important milestone in 2019.

The community will celebrate 100 years as a town this year.

Town of Peace River Communications Coordinator Autumn Hulme says the first event is set for January 12.

“It’s going to be a kick-off community event. We’re going to have a skit by a local theatre group, the Peace Players. There’s going to be a photo booth, period clothing for people to dress up in. There will be some information displays, historic photos, archive items, and skating in the park, as well as a performance by the Peace River Community Choir.”

Other celebrations are planned, but details are still being worked out.

“Later in the year, we’re still finalizing dates and times for some of the events, but we’re going to have a concert in the park sometime in the summer. We’re looking at a big event for December 1 to celebrate the actual signing of the town charter. We’re going to be soliciting throughout the year for items and ideas for a time capsule that we’re going to seal on December 1.”

Hulme says a lot of people from the community are involved in planning.

“Everything is being planned by a committee that is predominately made up of residents. There are some council members and a couple staff members on there, mostly as administrative support. Council has put some money in the budget for this year for this, so it’s going to be a big thing here.”

A new recreational facility will also open this year. Hulme says ti will include an ice rink, running track, field house, and a fitness centre.
