Snowfall warning in effect for Grande Prairie area

Jan 30, 2019 | 4:07 PM

UPDATE: The winter storm watch in effect for Grande Prairie, including the areas of Beaverlodge and Valleyview, have been downgraded to a snowfall warning.  Areas around Whitecourt and Fox Creek, as well as Hinton and Grande Cache are under a winter storm warning.

A slow moving frontal system is expected to produce snowfall amounts of 15-30 centimetres by Saturday afternoon. Areas under a winter storm warning can expect between 30-40 centimetres of accumulation over that time.

Environment Canada asks to consider postponing non-essential travel until conditions improve. Surfaces such as highways may become difficult to navigate due to accumulating snow.

A winter storm watch is currently in effect for the Grande Prairie area, with 30-40 centimetres of snow expected to accumulate by Saturday afternoon.

The watch also covers the Beaverlodge, Valleyview, Whitecourt, and Fox Creek areas. Hinton and Grande Cache are under winter storm warnings.

A slow-moving frontal system will spread heavy snow into the area beginning Thursday morning, and Environment and Climate Change Canada meteorologists are closely monitoring the situation as it progresses.

Winter storm watches are issued when a major snowfall of 25 cm or more within a 24-hour period is possible.
