Aerial photos of city and county updated

One of the most used and requested data sets for the City and the County have been updated.

New aerial photos of the region have been made available.

GIS Manager for the City Kent Bowman says the photos help communities in a number of ways including construction and land assessment.

“Departments utilize it throughout their operations, whether that’s asset management, Parks operations, emergency and disaster services, planning and development, engineering. It’s also integrated with many business systems applications that are used in all those departments such as traffic control applications, emergency communication centre operations,” says Bowman.

Bowman explains the City and County have been teaming up for years to continually update aerial shots of the region.

“We started in 2001 actually, and every four years we acquire a new photo for the area. The City and the County have partnered since 2001 every four years to acquire these. As part of the collaboration, it actually saves us some money going forward by doing a joint RFP and a joint data collection.”

Pictures of the county were taken at a 25-centimetre resolution, and photos taken with a 10-centimetre resolution were taken for the city and areas within the county such as Beaverlodge, Sexsmith, Wembley, Clairmont, Bezanson and the Village of Hythe.

The 10-centimetre resolution captures enough detail to see manhole covers and light fixtures.
