Midget AAA Storm drop Game 1 to Athletics

Feb 21, 2019 | 6:13 AM

The Grande Peace Ernies Sports Midget AAA Storm played their first playoff game in four years last night at the Coca-Cola Centre, but it wasn’t the result they were hoping for as they fell 2-1 in Game 1 of their best of five series.

The Storm would open the scoring 7:07 into the first period as Devin Aubin sniped a seeing eye wrist shot from the blue line into the back of the net to give the home side a 1-0 lead.

SSAC would receive a pair of power play opportunities in the opening frame, but the Storm’s penalty kill did a great job of keeping the Athletics to the outside and limiting their chances.

The Storm would get off to a slow start in the 2nd period and it would cost them.

Just 1:32 into the second period Stuart Dovey of the Athletics put a low shot on Cameron Beson who would kick out a rebound right to Mitchell Verenka who would tie the game for SSAC.

1:27 later, the Athletics would take their first lead of the game as Jonathan Milligan would rifle one past the blocker hand of Beson to make it 2-1 Athletics.

That would turn out to be all the Athletics would need as they earned a 2-1 win on the road to take a 2-1 series lead.

The series will now shift to Edmonton for Game 2 which is scheduled for Friday evening.
