GP Sports Council celebrates athletes of Northwestern Alberta at annual awards banquet

It was an evening to celebrate at the Pomeroy Hotel as the Grande Prairie Sports Council hosted their 5th annual Sports Excellence Awards.

Athletes, coaches, organizers, and delegates were all in attendance for the evening as a total of 12 awards were handed out.

Grande Prairie City Councillor Kevin O’Toole said it best prior to the awards presentations when he provided words from City Council on stage, ” Even though you all won’t win, you are all winners. ” That message was echoed throughout the night.

Outstanding Official – Dave Bleile (Football)

Unsung Hero – Darren Foley (3D Charity Tournament)

Sport Builder – Sarah Herman (Beach Volleyball)

Community Sportsmanship – Adrenaline Athletics (Cheerleading)

Junior Female Athlete of the Year – Catherine Minic (Swimming)

Junior Male Athlete of the Year – Carter Kettyle (Multi-Sport)

Female Athlete of the Year – Michelle Grisales (Judo)

Male Athlete of the Year – Tyler Funk (Volleyball)

Coach of the Year – Ron Thomson (Volleyball)

Development Coach of the Year – Anthony Wall (Football)

Team of the Year – GPRC Wolves Club U16 Girls Volleyball

Event of the Year – 2018 Alberta Summer Games

Other hightlights from the awards show included the announcement of the Grande Prairie Sports Council renaming themselves to the Grande Prairie Regional Sport Connection and that they will be hosting a sports development conference in Grande Prairie at the end of November.
