Mar 7, 2019 | 4:30 AM

The 2019 Mighty Peace Teachers’ Convention will take place in Grande Prairie today and tomorrow.

It is expected to draw 1,400 teachers from around the region. Approximately 125 speakers are on schedule to lead 200 sessions.

The convention is focused on providing professional development to educators, to maintain high standards of practice both individually and collectively.

“We are focusing on inclusion and wellness both for our teachers, our students and our families,” says Chantal Gallant, President of the Mighty Peace Teachers’ Convention Association.

“It’s to give our teachers the opportunity to learn about the latest in technology, pedagogy, curriculum, assessment, student engagement, classroom management, counselling, mentorship, leadership and administration.”

Events will be taking place at Grande Prairie Composite High School and Peace Wapiti Academy.

“This is a closed convention and it’s for teachers only. It’s organized by volunteer teachers and it’s paid for by the teachers,” said Gallant.

To open the convention today, Dr Jody Carrington, a Clinical Psychologist whose career has focused on working with victims of trauma, will speak about her past work with children and families.

“She’s very passionate and a big believer of the power of the relationship with people we love, lead and teach and she’s presenting three different sessions.”

Friday, three-time best-selling book author, Dr Greg Wells will speak to teachers about the science of wellness.

In addition to writing, Wells is also the CEO and founder of “The Wells Group”, which is a global consulting firm. His speech will focus on personal health and performance optimization.

The annual convention connects teachers from all over the region. “We cover Grande Prairie Public School District, Peace Wapiti, Grande Prairie Catholic, Northern Gateway, the Valleyview Region, Greater Peace and Holy Catholic Division,” says Gallant.

Several vendors will also be in attendance and set up in the Grande Prairie Composite High School gymnasium.

“We have a displays area, where our teachers can browse through and see what is up and coming or new resources that they can use in their classroom.”
